Since there is not much increase in iron requirement in the first half of pregnancy, it will be enough to take iron from foods. However, in the second half of pregnancy, both the increase in maternal red blood cells and the rapid growth of the fetus will increase the need for iron. Since this cannot be provided only through nutrients, it is necessary to take iron from outside. If iron deficiency anemia is not very serious, it does not jeopardize pregnancy, but when serious, it can lead to intrauterine growth retardation and preterm delivery in the baby.

In case of insufficient calcium intake, the needs of the fetus will be met by demineralization of the bones forming the maternal skeleton. During lactation, calcium stores will also decrease.
